Say "I Do" Under the Open Sky — Outdoor Wedding Ceremonies at Southern Granary
Picture This…
Your hair and makeup are done, your dress is on, and the coordinator appears at the Bridal Suite door with a smile and says, "It's time."
Your bridesmaids and groomsmen are already in position. The golf cart is waiting. You ride along the path through the open fields and step off at the canopied entrance to the Meadow, pretty hanging lanterns beside you. Your song is playing. The leaves are rustling gently in the breeze. All your favorite people are seated and smiling, and somewhere at the front your best friend is standing with his back turned, waiting.
The coordinator fluffs your dress. Your dad's eyes are misty. She gives the signal, the pastor leans toward the groom, and he turns around.
That first look, from twenty yards away, in front of everyone who loves you both, is the one that takes your breath away. You want to run to him. Instead you hold your dad's arm a little tighter and make yourself walk, one step at a time, toward your forever.
That is a Southern Granary Meadow ceremony, and it can be yours!
The Meadow
Our four-acre Ceremony Meadow sits alongside the Staunton River, tucked away between the trees.
The view changes with the seasons, from fresh green grass in the spring and summer to the changing tree line and golden tones of fall. There are several beautiful directions to face your ceremony, depending on the time of day and the kind of backdrop you're looking for.
The riverbank just beyond the Meadow is also one of our favorite spots for wedding portraits, with tall trees, shade, and the river in the background.
And then there are the things you can't plan. Deer have wandered through during ceremonies, and the occasional train horn becomes part of the soundtrack. Those are some of the small things that are unique to Southern Granary.
Getting to the Meadow
A golf cart shuttle is included with every Meadow ceremony, and it's available for anyone who would like a ride! Grandmas, a pregnant bridesmaid, a family member who would rather not walk the path, and of course the bride herself!
Some brides ride all the way. Some walk part of the way. We've even had an antique convertible, a favorite truck driven by dad, and a groom who rode to the Meadow on horseback.
Making the Meadow Yours
A ceremony arbor is included: currently a hexagon, cross, square arch, and triangle. From there you can keep things simple or bring in flowers, doors, lanterns, or other details that fit your style. Our favorite vendors know the Meadow well and can help bring those ideas together.
A few small touches that always land well: chilled water for guests on warm days, and a hot apple cider station in the fall courtesy of Judith and her Sisterly Ways team, always a wow factor.
And Then There's Virginia Weather
This is probably the biggest question we get about outdoor ceremonies, and it's a fair one.
Virginia weather can be unpredictable, so we watch the forecast closely and make the call together with you as late as the morning of the wedding. Ceremony chairs aren't set out until the day of, which gives everyone as much flexibility as possible.
If it's hot, rainy, windy, or just not going to be comfortable, you have good options. The large covered Patio gives you that outdoor feeling while keeping everyone sheltered, and an indoor ceremony in our climate-controlled reception space is always available too. Both are beautiful in their own right.
Our Day-of Coordinator and venue managers are there throughout the day to help make those decisions, communicate with vendors, move things around if needed, and keep the day moving. You don't have to watch the radar or figure out what to do next. That's our job.
And that's really the goal with an outdoor ceremony here, not just giving you a beautiful place to get married, but having a team behind you that knows the property, knows what works, and is ready when the weather doesn't cooperate.
A Few Things We've Learned
A late afternoon ceremony, around 4 pm, is a favorite for good reason. More shade in the Meadow, more comfortable temperatures for guests, and a natural transition into appetizer hour and dinner. We have a 4 pm sample timeline in our bride welcome packet.
And don't feel like you have to recreate someone else's ceremony. We've seen simple and elaborate, formal and relaxed, traditional and completely personal. The Meadow works with all of it.
