How to Turn Your Wedding Into a Full Weekend Experience

How to Turn Your Wedding Into a Full Weekend Experience

Hello brides! If you want to elevate your wedding celebration, turn your wedding day into a full wedding weekend!

Your wedding day itself is going to fly by — but what adds to the experience is the relaxed, excited energy of the days leading up to it. Being able to spend that time with your loved ones or your besties just extends the joy of the whole celebration. Many couples are stretching things into a full weekend, giving everyone more time to be together before it all becomes a beautiful blur.

Here's how it works best…

Why a Weekend Just Works Better

A lot of families are flying or driving in from out of state, and so many are Liberty University or University of Lynchburg families who already know and love this area from move-in weekend or parents' weekend. They're not just coming for five hours of ceremony and reception — they want to actually spend time with you, and they need a great place to stay.

Give them a place to land together for a few days and the whole weekend feels less rushed, more meaningful, and full of memories beyond just the reception time.

That's where our Southern Guesthouse comes in — just around the corner from Southern Granary, one minute away by car (as long as you catch the green light at the one and only intersection!). We're the only place in Altavista offering a large group house like this, and it is a wonderful option for couples. A decorator designed the renovations and truly knocked it out of the park — we get compliments often.

A Little About the House

Four private suites, each with its own bathroom:

  • Two suites with two bedrooms each

  • Two single-bedroom suites, one with its own private living room upstairs

  • Sleeping setup throughout: 2 queens, 3 kings, a two-twin room with a toddler bed

  • Plus a pull-out chair in the main living room

The main living room is amazing. A huge curved couch that seats eight, two swivel chairs, extra cushioned seating, four barstools around a circle bar table, huge tv, small ping-pong, and a stack of board and card games - there’s something for everyone. And did I mention the kid’s hideaway playroom upstairs… it’s a favorite of the under 10 crowd!

There's also a dedicated hair and makeup room with a full wall of lighted mirrors and plenty of outlets — because getting a group camera-ready at once takes some real estate! Full-length mirrors throughout, hanging racks for garment bags, iron and ironing board on site. This house was intentionally designed with wedding groups in mind

Out back, the private patio with the hot tub and fire pit is where every pre-wedding evening seems to end — everyone chatting in the twilight, snacking, and debating whether the groom is going to cry when he sees the bride coming up the aisle.

What a Weekend Here Looks Like

Thursday — Travel Day & Arrival
Families or the wedding party checks in at Southern Guesthouse, just 25 minutes south of Lynchburg. People arm-wrestle for their favorite room, head out for a local dinner, maybe take a walk at English Park, then soak in the hot tub and catch up on life.

Friday — Decorating & Rehearsal
Friday morning starts with homemade pancakes in the fully equipped kitchen — who is the best pancake flipper of the group?! Maybe the bride and mom slip away for a Head Spa appointment at Mint and Honey Head Spa up the street, followed by lunch at Main Street Cafe and a nail appointment for the girls. Then it's over to Southern Granary for rehearsal and decorating. Our covered Patio is a favorite spot for a rehearsal dinner — spacious, shaded, with a nice breeze most evenings. Afterward, everyone heads back to the Guesthouse for another round at the hot tub and fire pit.

Saturday — The Big Day
The bride and bridesmaids get ready in the Bridal Suite at Southern Granary, while the rest of the family gets ready together at the Guesthouse, putting that mirror room to very good use.

Sunday — Slow Mornings
Coffee, packing up, lots of reluctant goodbyes. Many families add an extra night or a late half-day checkout so nobody has to rush out the door too early.

What Families Tell Me

Almost every time, I hear some version of "that was perfect." The variety of spaces to gather, the comfortable beds, the full kitchen, and being so close to the venue — it all adds up to a weekend that just feels right.

A Few Local Favorites

  • Peace of Pie — gourmet pizza with fresh homemade dough, great for a casual group dinner

  • Rosa Negra — our favorite local Mexican restaurant

  • Tuscan — lovely Italian nearby

  • Main Street Cafe & Coffee — breakfast, lunch, and a cute gift shop

  • English Park — splash pad for the little ones in summer

  • Joe Bean's — coffee right around the corner
